Procedures for radial velocities of close binaries from spectra obtained with the Lick echelle-CCD spectrometer.

POPPER D.M. and JEONG Y.-C.

Abstract (from CDS):

Procedures are described for processing the raw data and analyzing them for radial velocities from spectra of close binary stars observed with the CCD-echelle Hamilton spectrometer on the 3-m Shane telescope at the Lick Observatory. IRAF software is used. Extensive tests are carried out on stars of standard velocity of types late F to K and on synthetic binaries made from a sky spectrum, with a range of rotational velocities, luminosity ratiors, and separation of the lines of the components. The results from the standard stars are satisfactory at the 0.2 km s^-1 level. The measured velocities in the synthetic binaries show that small corrections, not of a strongly systematic nature, are indicated for the larger rotational velocities, at the 2 km s^-1 level.
