Balmer and Paschen bound-free opacities for hydrogen in strong white dwarf magnetic fields.

MERANI N., MAIN J. and WUNNER G.

Abstract (from CDS):

In spite of the spectacular success achieved in recent years in the quantitative identification of exotic line features in the spectra of magnetic degenerates with fields of up to nearly 109G, analyses of the continuum spectra of these objects and their polarization properties still suffer from the lack of reliable atomic data for bound-free transitions in magnetic fields of that size. We show that the complex-coordinate method represents a tool well suited to producing routinely the vast amount of data on photoionization cross sections as functions of energy and field strength required for the analysis of the spectra. In particular, we compute the cross sections of the bound-free transitions from the magnetically strongly shifted Balmer and Paschen states, which at these field strengths essentially contribute to the absorption in the optical part of the spectrum, and determine from these cross sections (unnormalized) Balmer and Paschen opacities for all three polarizations in the field range 117 to 235 x106G at three representative temperatures, T=10000, 16000 and 25000K.
