Abstract (from CDS):

We report the discovery of a new AM Herculis system (polar), identified as the optical V∼19mag counterpart of the bright, soft, high-galactic latitude X-ray source RX J0453.4-4213 detected during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and present the results of our optical and X-ray follow-up observations. From the radial velocity variations of the Balmer and HeII emission lines we derive two candidate orbital periods: 101.95(20)min and 93.83(22)min. Cyclotron harmonics are visible almost around the whole orbit. The analysis of the phase dependent movement of their maxima leads to a magnetic field strength in the accretion region of B=36MG, and an angle ∼85deg for the sum of the orbital inclination i and the co-latitude of the accretion region β. The absence of M star features in the spectra provides a lower limit for the distance to the system of d>440pc.
