The total gas and dust abundances in the line of sight to X Persei, based on Chandra spectroscopy.

Abstract (from CDS):

We have observed the high-mass X-ray binary X Persei/4U 0352+30 with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) aboard the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. We fit the spectrum near the oxygen K-shell absorption edge to determine the total (gas+dust) abundance of oxygen along this line of sight. Comparison with UV gas-phase measurements along this same line of sight gives an abundance of grain-bound oxygen which is in general agreement with published grain model fits to the observed extinction. No evidence is found for a significant reservoir of oxygen in large, previously undetected grains. We also attempt to extract and fit the radial profile of a halo of scattered X-rays in the zero-order image, but our efforts are hampered by grating artifacts and high detector background. We do not obtain useful results using standard models for dust scattering.
