Mass transport in double-barred galaxy models.

PAPADOPOULOS N.J. and CARANICOLAS N.D.

Abstract (from CDS):

The properties of orbits in a new class of 2D galactic potentials are investigated. These dynamical models represent galaxies with a double barred structure and an inner disk. Using numerical calculations we try to connect the regular or chaotic character of orbits with the presence and strength of the primary or secondary bar as well as with the magnitude of the mass of the disk. Numerical and theoretical evidence shows that the presence of inner disk is important as it plays a significant role in the behavior of orbits. Of particular interest is the dynamical behavior of the system when mass is transported from the primary bar to the disk. A massive disk increases the velocity in the central regions and enlarges the chaotic phenomena. Comparison to galaxies with a singe barred structure lead to interesting conclusions.
