Infrared spectroscopy of the 1999 outburst of U Scorpii.

Abstract (from CDS):

We present infrared spectroscopy of the recurrent nova U Sco, obtained during the 1999 eruption. The 0.94...2.4µm spectrum is dominated by Hi, Hei and Heii emission lines and the pseudophotosphere of the hot white dwarf. The ejected material is overabundant in He and O; we estimate He/H≃4.5±1.7 and O/H≃0.013 by number, for electron temperature 2x10⁴K. There appears to be excess emission longward of ∼1.4µm, which is likely to be due to free-free emission by the material ejected in the 1999 eruption; from this we deduce an ejected mass of 2.7(±0.9)x10^–7M_☉.
