Evolution of newborn rapidly rotating magnetars: Effects of R-mode and fall-back accretion.

Abstract (from CDS):

In this paper we investigate effects of the r-mode instability on a newborn rapidly-rotating magnetar with fall-back accretion. Such a magnetar could usually occur in core-collapse supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. We find that the magnetar's spin and r-mode evolution are influenced by accretion. If the magnetar is sufficiently spun up to a few milliseconds, gravitational radiation leads to the growth of the r-mode amplitude significantly. The maximum r-mode amplitude reaches an order of ∼0.001 when the damping due to the growth of a toroidal magnetic field balances the growth of the r-mode amplitude. If such a sufficiently spun-up magnetar was located at a distance less than 1Mpc, then gravitational waves would be detectable by the Einstein Telescope but would have an extremely low event rate. However, if the spin-up is insufficient, the growth of the r-mode amplitude is mainly due to the accretion torque. In this case, the maximum r-mode amplitude is of the order of ∼10^–6-10^–5.

NAME LBV 1806-20 is the named assigned to the very massive star discovered by van Kerkwijk, Kulkarni et al. in their 1995ApJ...444L..33V paper A luminous companion to SGR 1806-20. It is a candidate to the most massive star known (M(init) about 200 solar masses, and a luminosity estimated to $10^6$ solar).
The relation between the Soft-gamma Repeater SGR 1806-20 and the massive star LBV 1806-20 is not clear (they seem to be 12" apart), but both sources are associated to the giant HII complex W 31. It seems that the very strong wind from LBV 1806-20 is powering the nebula SNR 10.0-0.3, and that LBV 1806-20 and SGR 1806-20 are two members of the cluster [BDB2003] G010.00-00.24. An interesting map of the region is presented as Fig.1 of the summary paper by Corbel and Eikenberry (2004A&A...419..191C)
