OSSE detection of the Vela synchrotron nebula.

STRICKMAN M., DE JAGER O. and HARDING A.

Abstract (from CDS):

We report on the detection of low energy gamma-rays from the Vela Supernova remnant at the ∼9σ level with the OSSE instrument on CGRO during an observation from 31 August to 20 September 1994. The source has a power law photon spectral index of ~-1.6±0.3 in the energy range ∼0.06MeV to ∼0.4MeV. Contamination by the galactic plane was found to be insignificant. This spectrum is perfectly consistent with an extrapolation of the E–1.7 spectrum of the ∼1' radius compact nebula surrounding the Vela Pulsar, as seen between 0.1-25keV with imaging instruments.
