2D Speckle polarimetry of Z Canis Majoris.

FISCHER O., STECKLUM B. and LEINERT C.

Abstract (from CDS):

We present the first high angular resolution polarization measurements of the pre-main sequence binary system Z CMa at λ=2.2µm. Both binary components are polarized. The polarization of the infrared primary (PL=4.2±2.0%, χ=173±34°) is near to that of the total system and is likely connected to the `outflow configuration'. The secondary shows an unexpected large polarization degree (PL=8.1±4.5%) at the position angle (χ=102±45°) different to that of the primary. This high polarization can be explained by a circumstellar accretion disk seen more pole-on than edge-on. The results are discussed with respect to the formation mechanisms of young binary stars.
