Abstract (from CDS):

The study of high redshift galaxies has made tremendous progress in the last few years. In order to understand their evolution, it is important to probe the gas content of distant ``normal" galaxies beyond z∼0.3. We searched for CO emission from a sample of galaxies in the redshift range of 0.35 to 1.06. Given the current limited sensitivity, we can only place upper limits to the gas content of these progenitors to luminous field galaxies of ∼3x1011M. We also searched a sample of distant luminous IR galaxies and detected two new galaxies at z∼0.1. The upper limits to and the detection of CO emission from these distant galaxies are consistent with the suggested upper limit to galaxy masses of 1012M posed by the cooling time argument.
