Towards the nature of progenitors of long gamma-ray bursts.

Abstract (from CDS):

The discovery of the type Ic supernova SN 2003dh in the afterglow spectrum of GRB 030329 has conclusively linked long GRBs to the death of a massive star. This has direct implications on our understanding of the GRB phenomenon, since we are now left with the collapsar model as the only scenario which is not directly inconsistent with observations. At the same time this observation also provides a firm foundation for using GRBs as tracers of star formation throughout the Universe, since we now know that a GRB event is closely linked to a short lived star. The exact stellar evolution which leads to the GRB event, however, remains unclear.
